Weslaco Man Sentenced to 58 years in Prison For Murder

WESLACO – A Weslaco man was sentenced to 58 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division for first degree murder.

An in-person jury trial was held from March 2-6, 2022 in the 332nd District Court for Victor Lee Alfaro, 31, who was convicted in the murder of Reynaldo Reyes, Jr. The jury handed down the verdict on May 6, 2022.

The Honorable Judge Mario E. Ramirez, Jr. presided over the trial. The case was prosecuted by Felony Division Assistant District Attorney’s Jay Garza and Gabriella Guerena; with assistance from Victims Unit Court Advocate Hector Garcia; the Edinburg Police Department; and Austin and Weslaco, Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab.

“I commend ADA’s Jay Garza and Gabriella Guerena for helping bring peace and justice to the family of Mr. Reynaldo Reyes, Jr.,” said Criminal District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez Jr. “This was a heinous crime and I am thankful the jury thoroughly weighed the facts and found Victor Lee Alfaro guilty.”

On May 4, 2016, Edinburg Police responded to an apartment complex in reference to gun shots in the area. Officers found Reynaldo Reyes Jr. shot and bleeding inside an apartment unit. He was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for medical treatment, but was pronounced dead as a result of gunshot wounds. Alfaro fled the scene and was later arrested in Weslaco, Texas.
