Jury finds Edinburg man Guilty of Aggravated Robbery, sentenced to 15 years in prison

EDINBURG – On April 11, 2024, a Hidalgo County jury found Luis Gerardo Lugo Pena, 28, of Edinburg, guilty of Aggravated Robbery, announced Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios.

On Friday, September 29, 2023, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Pena and his brother-in-law, were evading from law enforcement in a motor vehicle for crimes committed earlier in the day.  Pena and his brother-in-law, after their vehicle experienced a flat tire, targeted and brutally attacked Miguel Martinez Aguirre, 78, and robbed him of his vehicle in an effort to avoid arrest. Mr. Aguirre was immediately transported to McAllen Medical Center and diagnosed with severe trauma to his head and face.

The Jury heard from several residents from Edinburg, Hidalgo, Alamo, and Pharr that witnessed the chain of events and had an active role in gathering information to assist Pharr Police Department in finding these men. Mr. Pena was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Jury. The jury trial was heard by presiding judge, Rose Reyna Guerra, in the 206th District Court of Hidalgo County, Texas. 

The charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Pharr Police Department.  Assistant District Attorney Jacob Lee Salinas prosecuted the case with the assistance from Assistant District Attorney Joaquin Javier Zamora.
